Join FBANC and learn about judicial clerkships and externships at the federal and state level.  Come hear from a federal judge and former federal and state law clerks/externs share their experiences.  Topics will include increasing diversity in the judiciary, qualifications, the selection process, and the value of a clerkship/externship to one’s legal career!  Food and refreshments will be served.

Biographies

Honorable Donna M. Ryu (Panelist)

Donna M. Ryu joined the Northern District of California bench as a Magistrate Judge on March 1, 2010.  Prior to taking the bench, she served on the Hastings faculty as a Clinical Professor of Law.  From 1998 to 2002, as a member of the Golden Gate University Law School faculty, she served as the Associate Director of the Women's Employment Rights Clinic.  Judge Ryu began her legal career with McCutchen, Doyle, Brown & Enersen in San Francisco before joining an Oakland-based firm specializing in civil rights class actions.  She later founded Ryu, Dickey & Larkin, an all-women partnership in Oakland.  Her professional honors include California Lawyer of the Year in Employment Law, the Asian American Bar Association’s Joe Morozumi Award for Exceptional Legal Advocacy, the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association's Trailblazer Award, and the Rutter Award for Excellence in Teaching.  Judge Ryu graduated with honors from Yale University and received her J.D. in 1986 from U.C. Berkeley Law School, where she was a founder of the Berkeley Journal of Gender, Law and Justice.

Nalani Crisologo, Esq. (Panelist)

Nalani Crisologo is currently a legal research attorney for the law and motion department of the San Francisco Superior Court.  As a research attorney, she writes bench memoranda advising the judge on pre-trial motions such as demurrers, motions for summary judgment/adjudication, anti-SLAPP motions, motions to compel arbitration, and motions to transfer venue.  She also drafts tentative rulings and bench orders and assists with ex parte applications.  During law school, Nalani served as a judicial extern to the Honorable Stuart Hing, a judge of the Alameda Superior Court.


Rachel Kinney, Esq. (Panelist)

Rachel’s practice focuses on antitrust, commercial, and patent litigation, as well as trademark prosecution and IP counseling.  She represents technology companies and handles cases in all phases of litigation. Her prior experience includes an externship at the Federal Trade Commission in the areas of competition and consumer protection and working as an IP law clerk in-house at Gap Inc.  She also served as a judicial extern to the Hon. Susan Y. Illston and then to the Hon. William H. Orrick III of the United States District Court for the Northern District of California. Rachel earned her law degree from UC Hastings where she concentrated in civil litigation and dispute resolution and received three CALI / Witkin awards in legal writing and research, trademark prosecution, and mass media law.


Raymond R. Rollan, Esq. (Panelist)

Raymond R. Rollan currently serves as a Deputy City Attorney for the City of Hayward. Prior to joining the City, Raymond was an associate attorney at Haapala, Thompson & Abern LLP, where he represented clients in insurance defense and public entity defense matters. Raymond graduated from the University of San Francisco School of Law, where he served as the Student Bar Association Vice-President and Pilipino American Law Society Co-President. During law school, Raymond clerked at the Oakland City Attorney's Office and served as judicial extern to the Honorable Kandis A. Westmore of the United States District Court for the Northern District of California, and then to the Honorable Justice James A. Richman of the California Court of Appeal. Upon completion of the California bar exam, Raymond served as a temporary judicial law clerk to the Honorable Kandis A. Westmore. Raymond received his B.A. from UC San Diego.


Jennifer Sta. Ana, Esq. (Panelist) 

Jennifer Sta.Ana is an associate attorney at Levy Vinick Burrell Hyams LLP, a plaintiff-side employment law firm committed to advancing workers' rights and social justice. Jennifer graduated from USF School of Law, where she served as the Editor-in-Chief of the USF Law Review and was an Advocate of the Year finalist. In 2015, Jennifer served as judicial extern to Chief Justice Tani Cantil-Sakauye of the California Supreme Court. Upon receiving her license, Jennifer worked as a Bay Area Legal Incubator Attorney, helping low-wage Filipino workers with their labor trafficking and wage theft claims. Jennifer received her B.S. from UCLA and Master's from Georgetown University. 


Christine N. Epres, Esq. (Moderator)

Christine N. Epres is Associate Counsel with Robert Half International Inc.'s in-house legal department in Menlo Park.  In her role, Christine advises and supports the company and its domestic and international subsidiaries on data privacy and security, intellectual property, international licensing, commercial transactions, and regulatory compliance.  Prior to her legal career, Christine served on the legislative staff of U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein in Washington, DC and was a field representative for U.S. Congressman Mike Honda.  Christine received her Juris Doctor from Syracuse University College of Law, Master of Public Administration from Syracuse’s Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs, and B.A. from Santa Clara University.
